Game Introduction
Miitopia is a game made by Nintendo that originally came out on the Nintendo3DS. Miitopia was later ported over to the Switch with some added features. The Makeup Menu, which allows you to further customize your Miis. The Outings, which allows you to send your Miis out on outings increasing their relationship levels. The Switch version also gives you a horse companion which gives you added abilities based on your relationship. Miitopia is simple but highly recommend due to its massive levels of charm.
Story
In the world of Miitopia, everything was peaceful, until an evil dark lord started stealing people’s faces. Putting the stolen faces on his monstrous creations. In Miitopia, you play as the Mii of your choice, trying to save people’s faces by defeating the monsters wearing them. Along the way, you recruit other Miis of your design and give them personalities and jobs. Jobs are the equivalent to classes in other MMOs, and Personalities determine the way they react in battle. You will visit several unique worlds saving faces and solving problems along the way. In one world, you help a king get his face back, and in another save a town’s treasure from a devious genie, all leading up to facing the dark lord.
Gameplay
This game is highly customizable in many ways. As stated in the last section, this game allows you to give the Miis in your party personality. The personalities can affect what the Miis do in certain situations. For instance, a kind Mii will sometimes let the monster go, or a stubborn Mii will brace for impact taking less damage. This game also allows you to develop relationships between characters which also gives several team boosts. While in the Inn, you can send your Miis on outings to boost their relationship. The higher the relationship level, the more your guys will do things like boost each other’s attacks and help them fight.
The gameplay is just like most tactical RPGs, just simplified a bit. Although simple in nature it’s a great intro to RPG games for those who don’t usually play RPGs to get into the genre.
Final Thoughts
The only real drawback that I have with the game is that you can only control your character. The rest of your party is set to auto which is a bit unfortunate. I wished that there was at least a setting to take them off auto, so it’s more like other tactical RPGs. You also have the ability to place your main character on auto that’s typical of Idle RPGs. It would just make sense to have the option to set both your main character and the team options to auto or manual control.
This game is enjoyable despite its simplicity. I recommend this game just for the charm alone. Each environment is vibrant, and the story can be pretty funny and enjoyable. Most of that comes from the game’s highly customizable nature, especially if you are the kind of person that likes to put create strange-looking Miis.
