Warframe Overview

Digital Extremes released Warframe in March of 2013, and the expectation at the time of release was that Warframe would have little success. Warframe now claims seven years of success with over 25 updates and almost 50 million registered players. Waframe started with eight playable classes and today claims 43 unique frames, with 28 elite frames called primes. In July of 2016, Waframe’s success led to Digital Extremes organizing a dedicated annual conference called TennonCon. From our outlook, it does not look like Warframe is going away any time soon. In this overview, we are going to take a fresh look at Warframe, and try to give a brief description of all the major aspects and highlights of the game.

Warframe Review

Warframe Concept

Based on the concept of an elite warrior faction called The Tenno. The Tenno control agile ninja-like war machines called Warframes, each with its own set of abilities.  A unique mix of an MMO-TPS, infused with RPG elements, makes Warframe a refreshing and unique change from most MMO on the market. The gameplay is fast-paced and exciting, adding in parkour elements like slides, bullet jumps, gliding, and wall latch, each with a level of personal preference and mastery.  The setting takes place in some future time within our local solar system where the Tenno battle several tyrant factions, namely The Grineer, Corpus, and The Infested.

Warframe Graphics and Customization

Warframe’s realistic graphics and high level of detail significantly add to the overall experience. Warframe also offers a vast amount of customization that gives players control over the appearance of each playable element in the game.  You can choose from over 20 possible color pallets and set a color scheme of up to six colors for each warframe, weapon, and related items. Each item can be customized with a separate color scheme or set to match the same colors as the warframe. Each of the following items can be customized and obtained through in-game rewards or digital purchases.

  • Skins:  Skins allow you to change the overall look of your warframe.
  • Helmet: Helmets allow you to change the look of your headpiece of your warframe. Often come with matching skin.
  • Attachments: Attachment are ornamental pieces that you place on your chest, shoulders, and knees.
  • Syandana: Syandanas are back attachments that can often resemble capes, but can also be decorative attachments of different varieties and styles.
  • Weapons: All weapons can also be customized.

The orbiter, which doubles as your transportation and living quarters, can also be customized with its own color scheme.   You can decorate it with several types of items, including pictures, trophies, and bobbleheads, to name a few. You can customize the orbiter by applying skins to the inside and outside of the craft. The dojo, which is the clan or guild housing within Warframe, can also be customized. The dojo also allows you to build specialized rooms that will enable members to research and create warframes, weapons, and craft resources.

Warframe Classes and Gear

Typical of most MMORPG,  class types consist of damage, stealth, tank, and support based roles. Each frame comes with a minimum of four unique active abilities and one passive ability. Each warframe is a separate class of its own, giving players the ability to choose from over 40 different character types. With over 400 in-game weapons, players have a tremendous amount of freedom on how they customize their gameplay. Some of the possible styles are sniper, stealth, gunner, healer, support, tank, or Meele focused combat.

There are two types of gear in warframe, basic and prime. The basic frames and weapons are gathers by farming them from planet based assassination missions, completing quests, purchasing using faction standing, open-world bounties, or buying them outright using platinum, warframes premium currency. Primes gear is obtaining by collecting and opening relics to get the parts to assemble frames and weapons.

Warframe Leveling and Upgrading

Leveling in warframe is uniques to MMOs. With each frame, or weapon you able to level up to a max level of 30. At level 30, you obtain mastery with a given warframe or weapon.  As you level, you will gain mod points that will allow you to apply mods. Mods add abilities, enhance stats, and strengthen items. Each mod requires a given amount of points to use, also referred to as drain. There are three ways to improve your gear:

  •  First, you can double your mod points by adding a reactor to your warframe or a catalyst to your weapons.
  • The second way is to rank up your mods by using endo, this increases the strength of your mod but raises points or drain that the mods need to be applied.
  • The third way to improve your gear is by using forma.  After reaching max level 30, you are still able to increase the strength of an item by applying forma.  Forma allows you to polarize or change the polarity of a selected mod slot. Appling forma will reduce the amount of drain of a mod by 50% based on the chosen polarity. When you apply forma to a frame or weapon, it sets it back to level 0 or unranked. The item then has to be leveled back to mastery rank 30. Forma can be applied as many times as necessary to allow players to use higher mods, further strengthing the frame or weapon.

This unique way of upgrading characters and weapon allows the player to customize items stats, and abilities. In a sense, this is like having the ability to customizing and create Epic characters and weapons.

Warframe Game Content Overview

The mission types in Warframe is quite extensive, with 14 basic mission types. Here is a brief explanation of each.

  • Assassination: Assassination missions are the boss battle in warframe. Basic warframe pieces our often collection in these missions.
  • Capture: Locate and track down and capture VIPs. By far, the most straightforward mission in Warframe.
  • Defense: Defense missions are where you defend a target against five waves of enemies, after which you can choose to go another five waves or extract.
  • Excavation: In excavation missions, you have to place a drill on the ground at a designated point, protect it from enemies and keep it powered while it extracts whats ever at the location.
  • Exterminate: Exterminations are simple and straight forward. At the beginning of the mission, you will have a target number of enemies to kill. When you hit the designate number of enemies, you can extract.
  • Hijack: Using shield energy from your Warframe, you attempt to hijack an enemy transport. Defend it until you get it to the extraction point.
  • Hive Sabotage: Destroy 5 Tumor nodes on three separate infested hives to finish the mission.
  • Interception: Capture relay points and hold them until you receive the decoded message. Hold up to 4 points, the more you control, the faster it decodes. Easier if done with a team.
  • Invasion: Choose a faction and fight for control over a planet. Repeat Missions until one side wins, and the conflict ends.
  • Mobile Defense: Carry a key to multiply consoles, insert the key into consoles, and Protect it while extracting information form each.
  • Rescue: Rescue and extract a prisoner from an enemy prison. To complete the mission, you have or protect the prisoner to the extraction point.
  • Sabotage: Move and access multiply locations and cripple the enemy by destroying their equipment.
  • Spy: Espionage mission where you search three locations and extract data from the protected vaults.
  • Survival: an onslaught mission where you survive a five-minute continuous wave of enemies. Collect life support dropped by enemies or access tanks to keep your life support from falling to 0. After 5 minutes, you can extract or continue for another 5 minutes.
  • Void Fissures: Void fissures are a mission made up of one of the previous mission types.  Before you enter, you will need to select a Relic. Reactants will drop from fallen enemies. Collecting ten reactants will allow you to open the relic and receive 1 of six prime pieces held within. You can also get Forma Blueprint from Relics.

Warframe Story Line Quest

The story follows the history of the Tenno, their creation, and origin. The storyline, although in-depth and worth following, can be a bit hard to follow. A series of quest lays out the story and continues to grow with new updates. Quests completed offers rewards that add to the story in the form of warframes, upgrades, or opens up additional areas within the game.

Warframe Final Summary

In all Warframe is a highly successful game. It is exciting to play, and you can easily get lost in the game. There are only two negative aspects of the game that I would like to talk about briefly. There is a bit of grind when leveling and can feel a little redundant. You can resolve this by playing other aspects of the game. Last I have experienced a few bugs in the last couple of updates. Nothing that would stop me from playing the game. I would highly recommend giving it a shot, especially if you like the TPS style of gameplay.
